At the beginning of my adolescence my family and I went through more than one household. I was born in Visalia but I have lived in Lindsay my whole life. I was raised in a small apartment in Lindsay California. At the age of 5 my family and I moved to a new apartment complex where we stayed at. We have lived there for about 12 years now and 30 years in Lindsay. Lindsay was very familiar to me it was a more than a home to me I felt safe within its borders. Growing up in Lindsay it wasn’t a very big town but we made it our home.
I live with my loving mother, my three older brothers and my baby sister. My siblings and I didn’t really grow up with a father figure in our lives because our dad was in and out of prison for drugs so he left when I was young. My siblings and I were exclusively raised by my step-father that has been around for about 7 years now and by our good-hearted mother. Growing up poor, I learned the value of modest living and of dedicated hard work. In the year 2009 we had a tragedy happen in our family. My oldest brother Gerardo was diagnosed with cancer and passed away in June of that year. That brought our family closer to one another we made it through the toughest battle without my oldest brother but we got through it together.
A couple years after yearning my brothers death my family only got stronger. I can honestly say that my family is my rock. I have seen my mother go through one of the toughest battles no mother should have to go through and that helped me see my outlook on life different. My mother and I may bump heads here and there but there is nothing that we can’t overcome together. My mom raised my siblings and I to be respectful and responsible over what is in our hands. She taught us to be leaders and not followers. One of my life goals has always been to become something involved with criminology. There are going to be plenty of obstacles that I am going to have to go through in order to be where I want to be.
I have always found interest in anything that involved the study of the nature, extent, management, causes, control, consequences, and prevention of criminal behavior, both on the individual and social levels. Criminology is an interdisciplinary field in the behavioral sciences, drawing especially upon the research of sociologists, psychologists, psychiatrists, social anthropologists as well as scholars of law. Everything from having to stop the “bad guys” and helping out my community grabbed my attention. My goal as of now is to graduate and make my family proud of me. I know that it is going to be a bit tough but it will be all worth it in the end.
